Andy Jones - Junior Software Developer

My name’s Andy - I'm from East London, where I live with my wife and overly-pampered cat (yes, he does have his own Instagram). I’m a big sport fan, following F1, and a proud supporter of the best team in North London (depending on which side of North London you live). As so many others, I spent my teens and early twenties trying to become a rock star. But when that didn't pan out, I opted for the next best thing, operations and logistics. Last year I decided to take the plunge and follow a long-held passion of mine and turn it into a career, I decided to retrain to be a Software Developer. It has been slightly over a year since I made that decision and couldn't be happier with it – I’m honoured to be learning so much in my first few months as a Junior Software Developer at ClearBank.

Can you tell us a little bit about Innovation at ClearBank?

The Innovation team works across all areas of our platform to deliver features our customers want, with the reliability and performance they deserve. Innovation is split into several smaller areas focused on the platform itself, the applications that run on that platform, DevOps, Front-end, and Delivery. What this means for me is that I get to work with extremely talented engineers on a modern cloud-based platform. There is constant dialogue across Innovation regarding new technologies to leverage, ways we can improve our products, and cool new tech. Our focus is always to build and deliver the features that will help drive ClearBank to the next level.

What does a typical day at ClearBank look like for you?

As a junior, and my first role as a developer, every day is a chance to learn and develop. I’m constantly taking in new information and learning from my colleagues. It is difficult to pinpoint a 'typical' day, but there are a few constants by way of Agile ceremonies. The day will usually start off with two stand ups -  one for the Innovation team to discuss any issues or blockers that might impact releasing new software, and the second, my team's stand up where we share what we’re working on. It also acts as a place to connect, especially having started this role remotely. This is really important, as my first day was also the first official day of lockdown in the UK. I have never actually met my team in person!

Then it's on to whatever the day brings, working on code, learning, and sending a healthy dose of motivational GIFs in our team chat.

What has surprised you most about working at ClearBank?

The main thing that stands out is how easy it has been to onboard, and how well I’ve been supported in such a difficult time, globally. I was concerned about starting a new career in a completely remote setting, but everyone involved has made it a great experience in building and navigating the "new normal".

If you won the lottery what would be the first thing you do?

Not sure what the actual first thing I would do would be. But the first thing I would buy myself would be a Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref 5726/1A-014 (if there is one in stock)

Then, I’d love to return to the Maldives, where my wife and I spent our honeymoon, to swim with Manta Rays again.

What would be your karaoke song of choice?

Summer of '69 by Brian Adams.

It's fairly upbeat and in my range, so I recon I’d be able to pull off a decent rendition without hurting too many ears.
